Which CNC probe brand is best? Domestic or imported?
When choosing a CNC probe, look at three hard indicators — repeatability, trigger life, and after-sales response. A repeatability (2σ) of ≤1μm and a stylus trigger life above 10 million cycles are on par with imported brands; for service, check whether on-site installation and warranty are included. Domestic probes (e.g., Suzhou Hance) now match imported accuracy at 30-50% lower cost.
How much does a CNC probe cost?
CNC probe prices range from a few thousand to tens of thousands, depending on type (infrared vs radio), accuracy grade, and configuration. Infrared probes cost less than radio; domestic probes are typically 30-50% cheaper than imported equivalents. Contact the manufacturer with your machine model and requirements for a quote.
Infrared vs radio touch probe — which should I choose?
The difference is signal transmission. Infrared probes use light and require line-of-sight alignment, suiting small/medium CNC machines; radio probes transmit through obstacles and suit large machines, rotary tables, or multi-station setups. Choose infrared for standard 3-axis machines; choose radio for gantry, 5-axis, or rotary-table machines.
What is the difference between a tool setter and a probe?
Different purposes — a probe measures the workpiece; a tool setter measures the tool. Probes handle part alignment, dimensional measurement, and surface measurement; tool setters measure tool length/diameter, tool wear compensation, and broken-tool detection. For full automation, the two are usually used together.
What does 1μm repeatability actually mean?
Look at repeatability (2σ) — the core indicator. 2σ≤1μm means the probe's repeated triggering at the same point deviates by no more than 1 micron (about 1/70 the width of a human hair). ≤1μm is on par with imported brands.
Which probe for a BT50 / gantry / horizontal machining center?
For large machines like BT50 gantry or horizontal machining centers, a radio probe is more reliable (signal passes through obstacles, not limited by rotary-table angle); for small/medium machines, an infrared probe is sufficient and more economical. Tell the supplier your machine model and setup, and they'll recommend the right type.

What else can a probe do besides part alignment?
A probe has two uses — part alignment is the main function (automatic alignment, no manual adjustment); measurement/inspection is the auxiliary function (post-machining inspection, software judgment, and report generation). It can also do tool inspection: checking overcut, remaining stock, and whether the tool reached its target — stopping or re-cutting if not.
Is a probe useful for low-volume, high-mix production?
Even more useful. In low-volume, high-mix production every part needs alignment; manual alignment has fixture deviations (burrs, size, clamping force) affecting parallelism, flatness, and angle. A probe pre-checks whether the part is clamped flat, straight, and at the right angle, then auto-corrects or alarms and re-aligns — completing alignment in 20-30 seconds and keeping every part within tolerance.

How long does a CNC probe last?

Is the stylus a consumable? How often is it replaced?
Yes, the stylus is a consumable. The ruby stylus contacts the workpiece and wears normally — replace it after collision or wear. Ask about stylus price and lead time when buying, not just the probe price.
Is installation difficult? Do I need professionals?
Professional commissioning is required — do not install it yourself. Installation involves machine macro programs, signal pairing, and coordinate calibration; mistakes can cause inaccurate measurement or even damage the machine's circuits. Choose a supplier that offers free on-site installation and training.
